Another Great Kindleboards Thread: Yarnies

This is totally unrelated to SFR, but hey, geek girls like us have varied interests. For all you knitters and crocheters out there, here's a thread on the Kindleboards where you can discuss your yarn obsessions.

I like a bargain, so I'm always on the lookout for sites that search out good books at good prices. Here's a good one: Daily Cheap Reads. They have "Books for your Kindle for $5 or less." Cool!

What are your favorite sites for finding book bargains?

Book 2 in the Beacon Series: Progress Update on Opal 3

Finally, I have a name for the next installment of the Beacon series: the title of book 2 is "Opal 3" (the 3 referring to any planet with Earth-like conditions). You can see how this could evolve into quite a few books, with the jewel-themed titles.

Opal 3 is developing into something a bit bigger than Emerald 3, in part because the setting is spread out more (an outpost station, an asteroid field, and the planet Opal 3). But also because of the subplot that's been developing. Without giving too much away, I can say that it has something to do with Down syndrome. I know, DS and space opera, not your usual fare.

For those of you waiting to see more of Fioran and Alohxi, never fear—it'll be a little while, but they'll have their very own novel.

Update on this week's post about the Cover Art Review blog: Several people dropped by to offer input, and a couple of them took the time to really pick apart the cover of Emerald 3 and say what works and what they'd change. A special shout-out to Nathan Lowell for being thorough and funny. :)

Cover Art Review Blog

I'm a bit late on this because I was away for a few days, but . . . drum roll . . . the cover for Emerald 3 is up on the Cover Art Review blog.

If you have an opinion about this cover and want to share it or you'd like to influence future covers, here's your chance. :)

The Power of a Word

I was reading something work-related today and came across mélange. Instantly, that one word brought back the endless deserts, the giant man-eating sand worms that could be avoided by using an irregular gait, the people of Dune with their all-blue eyeballs from consuming mélange.

Just one word has the power to recreate an entire planet, an entire people—a bazillion years after I read the book. (I was twelve. Yep, that was a loooong time ago.)

Dune is going on my TBR-again list.

And as for the word choices I make while I write? No pressure, right? Um, yeah.

Thank you, mélange.
